The through line

Making the future
something you can play.

Edward “Ned” Lerner is a game developer, engineering leader and entrepreneur whose work spans 3D simulation, immersive games, Internet voice and shared development tools.1234

The beginnings of a game developer

Lerner left technical support at Four-Phase Systems, a minicomputer maker, to write games. With Paul Neurath he developed Deep Space: Operation Copernicus for Sir-Tech and programmed the spacefaring adventure Space Rogue.2989

After two canceled projects and a move to California, Lerner’s newly formed Lerner Research signed with Electronic Arts in 1985. Chuck Yeager’s Advanced Flight Trainer followed in 1987 and became a hit. EA later called it “the company’s first number one best-seller for the IBM PC.”2951011

Lerner designed F-22 Interceptor for Sega Genesis with programmer Gene Kusmiak, then took to the racetrack with Car and Driver on PC.491213

From graphics to worlds you could inhabit

At Lerner Research, Chris Green developed texture-mapping code for clouds and billboards in Car and Driver. That work helped power Ultima Underworld’s 3D world, a project Lerner also helped fund.141546

Ultima Underworld helped establish the immersive sim: a world of interacting systems where players could explore, experiment and find their own solutions.1617

In 1992, Lerner Research merged with Neurath’s Blue Sky Productions to form Looking Glass Technologies. System Shock and Flight Unlimited followed. Producer Warren Spector later told Polygon that the studio’s influence “can’t be overstated today.”129171846

On the people who built Looking Glass

Building Looking Glass

At Looking Glass, Lerner served as Executive Vice President and Chairman of the Board. He also produced John Madden Football ’93 for Sega Genesis, bringing the studio’s work from fantasy dungeons to the football field.484750

Ken Levine described his time at Looking Glass as an education in game design, crediting Neurath and Lerner with creating a studio whose people and games were ahead of their time.19

Making the Internet a place to play together

Lerner and Art Min founded Multitude in 1996. Their game FireTeam put live conversation at the center of team-based arena battles: players could call for help and coordinate moves while the action unfolded. Jim Morris developed its voice technology. An E3 demonstration in 1997 connected players in Atlanta with Multitude’s staff in San Mateo; the game shipped in December 1998.2262827

FireTeam drew coverage from WIRED, GameSpot and Computer Gaming World. The Red Herring put Lerner on its June 1997 cover as “The social engineer” and named him one of its Top 20 Entrepreneurs the following month.272262930

Multitude’s FireTalk brought Internet voice calls, group conferencing and shared browsing beyond games. The company reported 1.7 million users, and the service found a place in distance education. After FireTalk and HearMe closed in 2001, Paltalk’s Jason Katz bought their subscriber lists, source code and pending patents.31323334

Helping studios build more ambitious games

As chief technology officer of Electronic Arts’ Maxis studio, Lerner worked on architecture and performance for The Sims 2.353

At Sony Worldwide Studios from 2003 to 2017, Lerner led engineers building tools for other game makers. Their Authoring Tools Framework (ATF) supplied reusable components for level editors, animation tools and other production software. Bill Budge created the framework; Ron Little and colleagues extended it. Naughty Dog turned its LevelEditor sample into Charter, used for Uncharted and The Last of Us.36436

Lerner championed making ATF open source. Riot Games and Infinity Ward adopted it alongside Sony’s studios, while his tools organization also worked with the LLVM compiler community. In a six-part series in 2014, he made the case for sharing software: split the costs, improve the tools and work together across company boundaries.4373839

Bringing shared experience beyond games

Lerner founded Hearo in 2017 to bring friends together around the same screen, even when they were far apart. Hearo: Multiplayer TV let people watch and talk together through desktop and mobile apps. During the pandemic, the team expanded plans for live sports to include television and streaming entertainment. The open beta arrived in February 2020, followed by the broader app launch that December.457

In 2025, Lerner returned to independent work under the Lerner Research name.3
